I Said What?

I Said What?
One of the fun things about blogging is rereading old posts.

I’ve been doing this for almost nine years now.  Often when looking at current statistics I see posts from years gone by and I don’t remember what I said.  I enjoy going back and reading those old posts.  Some of them crack me up.  Some of them make me think.  Some of them make me think…what was I thinking?

I often say to myself “I said what?”

OMG, I said things that would piss off a lot of people today.

Actually, my thoughts have not changed that much, mostly I have developed a little bit of a filter.  Commenters kicking your ass for things you say will help you develop a filter.

I have learned to filter out “Bad words.”  I don’t really think there are bad words only bad intentions, but since many people react negatively to some words, regardless of the context, I have learned to just stay away from their usage…most of the time.

I have learned to stay away from politics.  This has been hard as I have always enjoyed political discussions.  I can even remember a time when friends could share different political positions and still remain good friends.  Sadly, that is no longer the case.

There are other subjects to avoid.  Don’t make fun of someone’s religion.  Don’t joke about sexual orientation (although there is a lot of funny stuff here). Be careful when discussing someone’s intelligence, and do not post anything about anything to do with race.

So many topics that are just best avoided.  I get it.  What does surprise me is the seemingly innocuous topics that will manage to be the aluminum foil on someone’s bad tooth.

You can make a comment about killing an insect, wasting water, using a sponge, almost any subject will make someone angry.  And this to an audience of about 43 people.

If I make a satirical comment about any of life’s problems, someone will offer a solution.  There are many problem solvers who read my posts.

Nine years!  That is a long time, for someone as shallow and lazy as me.  Lately my readership is decreasing.  I don’t know if it is because my posts suck, or this blog thing is losing steam.  I’ll go with the latter, because, well because I know I am fabulous so it can’t be the former.

I often think about quitting.

Then some friend drops me an email telling me that they enjoy my posts or I get a really nice comment from someone I really respect.  That’s all it takes for me to continue.

I don’t think I can quit, I just may not post as often.

Many great painters, writers, musicians and other artists were abject failures until they kicked the bucket.  Then others discovered their genius.

Who knows, maybe I am an undiscovered genius.  So, I will continue to post occasionally, because someday these posts will be recognized for their brilliance and importance.

Nah, probably not…who cares,  even if only a few people read these posts, I do enjoy the posting.

Kind of like singing in the shower.

  1. I enjoy reading whatever you write. There seems to be a slow up in comments lately, I wonder why that is?

  2. Too many points raised here. If I were to answer them all my comment would be longer than your post.

First - do not stop blogging. Blogs like yours are a little light, a beacon, in a dark and sad Internet full of badness. Keep blogging.

Second - I for got what my second point was. But it was a good one.

Third - Singing in the shower or in the bath is good. I sing in the shower. The neighbours like it so much they have broken our windows to hear me better. They even invited the police to come and enjoy.

You're a legend, JoeH. Not recognised in your own time.

    God bless.

  3. People don't like honesty anymore and they sure don't like a different opinion!

  4. Comments are dying out on most blogs. And bloging seems to be going away. I'm glad I blogged during blogs heyday. But I still really enjoy reading blogs. Yours are so entertaining. Others have beautiful pictures. Others talk about personal things that I can relate to. My blog is pretty bland. Mostly a travel blog and a doing nothing blog. But I enjoy those that make me think. So keep on blogging please.

  6. Don't you dare quit! I need my funny bone tickled and you are so good at that. Pay attention to Carol. There are so many like her on all our blogs that read, enjoy but just don't usually comment.
Besides singing in the shower is therapeutic.

  7. You amuse me. I always check to see what you've done now! Sometimes I think about stopping, but then something outrageous (in my mind) happens, and I think, "I can't wait to blog about this!" Take a break, we'll be here.

  8. I look forward to reading what you have to say it would be sad for me if you quit blogging. I use to blog years back and some days I think about starting back doing it. Take care, JEan.

  9. I too look forward to reading your posts. I don't comment very often, but enjoy them nonetheless!

  10. I'm fairly new to your blog, can't recall how I stumbled on it, most likely it was because the name sounded like something I could relate to. My late husband was a proud card carrying "Cranky Old Man" and your blog often stirs up long forgotten memories. It's funny how the things that irritated me the most when he was alive are what I miss the most now that he is gone. I don't have a blog of my own and I rarely comment on others but I always look forward to reading what you have to say. Please keep on being a Cranky Old Man, I for one would really miss you!

  11. I love your posts! I even enjoy being offended since I really don't get offended...unless you make a comment about my Momma! I think we have become so white washed these days. Life is so short, can't we all agree to disagree sometimes and have a good laugh? I've been blogging for 12 years and I put my blog to print because, like you, I think someday somebody will read the books and marvel at what a fabulous life I lead and make a movie about it...and that will be the day I win the HGTV Dream House! Ha! Have a great Sunday and make me laugh!

  12. I've over the years tempered a lot of what I have written and what I have left for comments. I actually got kicked off of someone's blog years ago because they were offended by my comments (every time I tried to comment it said I was not allowed to do so; these were the old AOL journals). Looking back I was too zealous about certain topics regarding religion. That helped me learn my lesson. I rarely comment on political blogs.

I hope you do continue blogging, albeit with perhaps less posts. Blogging is fickle. You never know when one post will generate a lot of comments and another one doesn't generate that many. I certainly prefer it to Facebook.

  13. I've been a fix-it person all my life, always offering solutions even when I shouldn't. Good old satire. Sometimes I get it, sometimes I don't. I do enjoy your posts though.

  14. I write for my readers but also me, myself, and I. It is a diary of sorts and does remind me of my past life. Yes, politiss is no longer a subject of moderation, but I can remember my husband talking about his Dad and Aunt arguing politics across the dinner table.

  15. I like your style. Even if I don't comment, I'm still out there, breathing, waving.
Like Tabor, I write for readers, but also to see what I'm thinking. It's like talking out loud
with a keyboard. And since it's public, it has to make a modicum of sense. probably.

But it's fun. Don't give up, you never know who might be watching.

  16. Joe, I've only known you a few months but read your stuff regularly so see? There's new readers out there still, they just haven't found you yet :) I agree that blogging isn't what it used to be, but you're a good guy & always an entertaining read so I hope you keep doing what you do so well. Just wish there was some occasional sex & politics :)
