OH WOW!

OH WOW!

My wife sometimes talks like she is tough and uncaring, especially when she is driving.  She will complain about this, that and he and she to me, but when push comes to shove?  Oh Wow!

Every now and then I will catch Mrs. C on the phone, the conversation goes like this,

“Really?”

“……………………………………………………………………………”

“Oh wow!”

“………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..”

“Cool”

“…………………………………………………………….” “Oh wow!” “…………………………………………………………………………..”

“Last week we…”

“…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………”

“Oh wow!  You know I just got…”  “…………………………………………………………………………..”

“Oh wow!”

“………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….”

“Cool”

“……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………”

“Cool, but I HAVE TO GO TO WORK, I’m La…”  “…………………………………………………………….”

“Oh wow!”

“……………………………………………………………………………………………………………….”

“I agree, and we have to get together soon.”

“……………………………………………………………………………………………..”

“Ha ha…Ok, I really have to go.”

“Who was that?”

“Lisa Periwinkle. I worked with her 15 years ago, whenever she calls she never shuts up, I just can’t get her to get off the phone, and she never listens to anything I have to say.”

“Do you like her?”

“Not really.”

“Do you care if you never hear from her again”

“Not really.”

“Then just hang up whenever she calls.”

“OH WOW! I couldn’t do that.”

And I’m a jerk?

  1. I'm assuming Lisa Periwinkle doesn't read your blog? Nah, you're not a jerk.

    1. Wait, I just reread my comment and I think it makes me sound like I think you're a jerk..and I don't! Truly!

  2. I think the last time I heard "Oh wow!" that many times was in '69, and it had something to do with something in a baggie.....

  3. There's something to be said for letting calls go to voicemail.

I couldn't do so many Oh wows. I'm poor at faking enthusiasm.

  4. Don't be so hard on Mrs. C. Like me, a gal doesn't really want to cut all ties. One never knows when Mrs. Blab will end up in the stall next to her when there's no toilet paper and she has to ask her to hand some.

  5. I have an acquaintance who never answers his phone, always lets it go to voice-mail. I think he may be in the witness protection program.

  6. I used to work with a guy who would walk to his front door, reach out and ring the doorbell, and tell the person on the phone, "Oh! There's my doorbell! Gotta go!"

Okay. So maybe he did that when he was talking to ME. It only took me four or five times to catch on that somebody always came to his door when I was talking to him.

  7. I understand Mrs C completely on this one, having done the same in the past. However, these days, I can just suddenly switch off my phone and the next time she calls or I see her I say my mobile battery died.

  8. Sometimes I use the excuse that something is boiling over on the stove but mainly I blame a faulty line.

  9. Yeah, that's Queenie. I often get in trouble for pointing out that she treats people she dislikes better than she does me. She ain't afraid to hang on on me ever: Bad connection? Hang it up! Didn't respond as expected? HANG UP! A call coming in from someone she hates? Hang Up! Talked about something HE was interested in? Hang up! ;-)

  10. Oh wow, that almost sounds like the one sided conversations I have heard here when Cindy is on the phone... her most common phrase is " right, right" I bet she says that 100 times per call.

  11. Like me, she was raised to always be very, very polite on the phone, no matter what. When it comes to sales calls i've gotten over it, and i'm better about saying i need to go when it's friends, too. If your wife gets to the end of her rope, she will get over it, too.

  12. I'm guilty obligatory politeness also. Sometimes, it is just the imaginary person at the door that saves me.
Of course if Lisa follows you, problem solved.

  13. I find complaining fatiguing and usually try to change a situation rather than complain about it. But I know a lot of folks who love to complain.

  14. Well, yeah, you're a jerk, but you're also right :-)

  15. The trick to polite hanging up is to do it while you are talking, not while the person on the other line is talking. :-)
