HOW OLD ARE YOU?

HOW OLD ARE YOU?

Mrs. C is a bit younger than I am.  Young enough so that years ago our relationship might be a bit creepy, but not so young that at our ages today it is weird.

She does sometimes make fun of me for things I say.

I once mentioned that her age “puts a little giddy-up in my step.”

She just shook her head and said, “Please do not ever say that in public.”

Just the other day on the phone she asked from work if it had rained much at home.  I responded,

“It came down pretty good for a while, but it was not a gully washer.”

“GULLY WASHER, How old are you?”

“Why, what is wrong with ‘gully washer’ it is a common term.”

“Do you even know what a gully is?  Where is the nearest gully from our house?”

“I don’t know, it’s like a thing that turns into a stream during a heavy rain.”

“We don’t have gullies around here.  Only old people say that.”

“But…”

“Look, I don’t say anything when you tell me not to ‘chew my cabbage twice’, I stay silent when you mention ‘Carter having pills’, I look the other way when you call someone ‘wishy-washy’, or talk about putting on your ‘Sunday Best’,  but I’m drawing the line on ‘Gully Washer!’”

“Well I don’t like all the new way to talk I hear these days, like kids won’t say ‘Don’t talk about me’ anymore, they say ‘I don’t want to hear my name out of your mouth,’ just how dumb is that?”

“It’s not dumb at all, as a matter of fact, I don’t want to ever hear ‘Gully Washer’ out of your mouth!”

“I get it, you don’t have to tell me twice, stop flapping your gums!”

“You are such a jerk!”

Growing old is not for sissies.

  1. Hahahahahahahaha!!! Omgosh. I love Mrs. C. My kids ask me at least once a week how old I am but that's because I'll say something is groovy and especially when I say, far out man. Hahahaha. Sometimes I do it on purpose. :)

  2. I do this on purpose because it makes everyone cringe. I'm old and I can do and say whatever I want. I say go for it. Oh wait. You might have to pay a heavy price for saying what she told you not so say. Never mind...you can think it though.

Have a fabulous day, Joe. 😎

  3. I say 'gully-washer', and I'm a lot younger than you, too. . . ;)

LOL @ Mimi - I do the same thing. After a certain age, I think part of the job description is to get your kids to roll their eyes. . . (They also love it when I try to use *their* slang, especially if I don't do it quite right). . .

    CAt's pajamas, anyone?

  4. We use the How Old Are You the opposite way, when somene is being immature and acting like a child.

  6. Haha--I don't think I've heard "then Carter has pills" since my grandpap died in 1982! :) Well Joe, this reminded me of something funny that just happened a few months ago on Facebook. A former classmate was gathering names for a "Let's turn 60 together" get-together later this year. One guy (Ned) said "I don't turn 60 until 2021" and I said "Aw Ned, don't be such a jive turkey" and this girl in our class (Lorraine) said "Doug--no one says turkey anymore" and I said "Oh Lorraine, sit on it" and she said "Omigod, no one has said that since 1977, have you been living in a cave?" SHE HAD ZERO SENSE OF HUMOR IN HIGH SCHOOL AND HASN'T CHANGED! For the rest of the conversation I went to great pains to come up with every 70's phrase I could think of!

  7. You're obviously not Gen-Z my friend. In need of a chill, maybe. You're being a little extra right now. Yet I bet your car is flex.

    God bless.

  8. That is funny and I can relate. You know if you plan it right, you can bring back those sayings. We just need the kids to think it is their idea. If you could just get Kim or her clan to use them, they would be hunky dory once more.

  10. I never heard of the Carter pills thing, or chewing cabbage twice. But gully-washer is common. My boys told me I'm never allowed to say "redonkulous." That's like waving a red cape at a bull.

  11. What's wrong with Gully Washer?? I've never heard it before, but it sounds just right to me. I love some of the old time sayings, they make more sense, to me anyway. I think Mrs C just needed something to rant about.
How about "it's raining cats and dogs!"
"Quick, catch me a poodle, I've always wanted one." Or: it's raining cats and dogs, replied with don't step in (on) any poodles.

  13. I have to use Google to understand what these blasted members of the younger generation are saying these days. Let's go back to the good old days!

  14. Wow, you've made me feel old.
I recently complained about all the rigamarole involved in getting bundled up for the cold and people my age laughed and laughed. One person said her mother used to use that expression and I am not old enough to be her mother!!

  15. i think it is natural for both of you to speak words related to your era (i mean, just few years back)

i am fifty (fresh entry) and i miss all words and sentences that were familiar to people of my age and i miss it terribly !
as a teacher it was most sad thing to learn that new generation specially one who is responsible to teach is already completely unaware of language we used to speak back then ,this hurts me
