Watching TV with Mrs.
Cranky
The Cranky
House loves TV. I know many of you hate
TV and only watch PBS and the news. That is very admirable, but our house is a
TV house. We watch it all the time. News, reruns, reality, movies…we watch it
all. We watch while playing computer games
or reading. Sometimes the TV is only
background noise. We need background
noise…there are no children in the house.
Sometimes
Mrs. C naps while watching TV. This causes
problems in the Cranky house. We both
have similar taste in TV, but sometimes she will be watching a show that I do
not care for. When she dozes off, I
change the channel. Mrs. Cranky sleeps
like a dog. She can be sound asleep snoring
gently and when I change the channel she immediately wakes up.
“Why did you change the channel?”
“Because I hate ‘The Millionaire!’”
“Well I hate ‘Judge Mathis.’”
“Yeah, but you were sleeping.”
“I can’t sleep to ‘Judge Mathis’!”
I know better than to argue with this logic, so I turn “The
Millionaire” back on and she instantly goes back to sleep.
Late at
night I will be watching a show and before she falls off to sleep I am told to
put on an “On Demand” show (It’s a Cablevision thing).
“But I’m watching ‘Wives With Knives.’” (I love that show.)
“That show gives me nightmares when
you fall asleep and leave it on.”
“I’ll turn it off before I fall
asleep.”
“No you won’t, and if you do, turning
the TV off wakes me up. The ‘On Demand’
shows goes silent when done, but the TV stays on.”
“So I have to watch a show I don’t want
to watch when you are asleep?”
“Yes!”
“And the TV has to stay on all night?”
“Yes!”
“That use of electricity costs money,
lots more money than the water you save in the kitchen with a napkin covering
the half a glass you never finish.”
“You’re a Jerk!”
And still I
love her.
My dad was that way. He'd fall asleep, we'd turn the channel and boom! Up like a bolt of lightning! The only time the t.v. is on in our house is to watch a movie on those rare moments when everyone is home together. When I'm sewing I have on Netflix, Hulu or Youtube creepy crime show and at night it's Mother Angelica. My dog even knows when it's time for bed. She hear the Mother Angelica into and jumps in her bed! :D
ReplyDeleteMy wife is much the same, sleeps like a stone. You could literally dismantle the house around her and she'd never stir! But let her fall asleep during a rerun of "Say yes to the dress!", and it's an instant "HEY, I was watching that!!!"
ReplyDeleteHa! I'm the same way. It's a guy thing when ESPN or the Science Channel is on and someone turns the channel to a chick flick movie. I wake up in a cold sweat right away.
ReplyDeleteTV on all night? ALL night?
ReplyDeleteWouldn't it be cheaper to play her a white noise CD to sleep by?
There's a kind of equilibrium in your house.
ReplyDeleteWe turn on the radio for the day to music that offends no one, and at night have a fan on for white noise. It's easier, i think.
ReplyDeleteI can't sleep with a television on. In fact we don't have a television in our bedroom. We have a white noise machine though because we had some horrible neighbors that would let their dogs bark at all hours of the night. I'm so happy they moved.
ReplyDeleteHave a fabulous day. ☺
I don't know how anyone can sleep with the TV on. I love me some TV, but the slightest change in tone or volume will wake me up. What the heck is Wives with Knives? It sounds fabulous.
ReplyDeletei'd be drinking heavily... :)
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't last long with the TV on constantly. We even have a rule for the Grands - no TV until after dinner when they visit. We tell them that we want to actually converse with them. We record some shows but generally, we do wonder sometimes why we're paying for cable!
ReplyDeleteMine is on all day also since I have tinnitus. It helps to distract my ringing ears. HOWEVER--what on earth is Wives With Knives? Going straight to Google from here. Sounds really scary.
ReplyDeleteWe cut cable almost a year ago...and would you believe that we are still watching as much TV (possibly even more) than with cable? My husband is a genius at finding stuff you can stream. Now I can watch German TV if I want to. We also use the TV as background noise for going to sleep. Reruns of Seinfeld or Frasier are great for that. Luckily, our TV has a timer so it turns off after we fall asleep.
ReplyDeleteAh, a bit of sentimental honesty crept into a Cranky post.
ReplyDeleteDon't we all, Joe, don't we all.
Oh, Lord. MY WIFE, unlike me, always has to have some sort of noise happening. More often than not, that means the TV. Now, we have many shows we both like and I enjoy watching those shows with her, but when we go on vacation, she likes to have the TV in the hotel room on ALL NIGHT. We've worked out a system of covering it partially with towels so the light doesn't keep me awake since I hate any light in the room when I'm trying to sleep.
ReplyDeleteSimilar situation in my house, too, Joe. My wife would have the TV on 25 hours a day if a day could have 25 hours. She will watch crap on TV just to have the TV on. Fortunately for me I can watch my news and anything I recorded from the night before while she is out slaving over a hot desk all day. A couple of hours of TV a day is about all I can stand. (Except during football season ;)
ReplyDeleteI have a post out in my backyard that I argue with and I can tell you my success rate is better when arguing with the post :)
ReplyDeleteOh, I have the TV on whenever I'm home. Even when I'm not watching it. I'd sit down and watch all day if I didn't have chores to do. I'd watch the trashiest reality shows, and even GOLF. Just to be watching. I love TV. And yet I can still read and write...
