PORN*…in the day

PORN*…in the day

My parent’s generation used to claim they had to walk two miles to school every day, uphill and against the wind both ways.  According to Howard Stern, radio icon and King of all Media, my generation’s equivalent to this difficult walk to school is we searched through National Geographics, New York Times underwear ads and an occasional Nudist Magazine for our porn.

Howard is correct.

Porn is easy for today’s kids to find.

What we considered racy is now found every day in magazines and the newspaper.  What we thought was exciting on the big screen is now rated PG.  What we hid under our mattress is now found by Googling “Nude Women.”  What we skulked into basements and paid 50 cents to see in 8 mm film are now on DVD easily purchased in sleazy stores, found on cable TV, or downloaded from the internet.  They are in color with fast forward, rewind and pause. And the women are hot, not skanky! (So I have been told.)

I remember the 1967 movie “Blow up.”  There was reported to be a scene where a lady’s private parts were shown for a fraction of a second.  A bunch of us immediately went to see this movie.  We stayed for two viewings.  In the scene which had a reported “beaver” shot, I saw nothing.  I don’t think anyone saw anything.  We all reported that it was amazing.

I never had to walk more than a mile to school, and it hardly ever snowed.  The hills only went one way and sometimes the wind was at my back, but it was incredibly difficult to find porn and it wasn’t very good.

*The Cranky Old Man does not advocate pornography and finds it to be abhorrent and disgusting.  References to pornography past and present come from second hand resources not personal experience.

  1. I never had to walk any farther than to the end of our driveway, but getting a baritone saxophone home on the bus was a chore.
I also recall spending a little more time than necessary checking out the underwear pages of the Sears catalogue. Racy stuff.
Think of all the trees we're saving by having it all on line these days! That's a good thing, right?

  2. I was a big fan of National Geographic magazine back in the day, especially their photographic forays into New Guinea. ;)

  3. Yep, things have changed.

Did Daisy Dukes start the booty shorts trend? I think the girls nowadays are trying to make them even shorter than hers were. :)

  4. Yep, it's a different world today isn't it. Yes it is and it's not for the better either.

    Have a fabulous day. ☺

  5. I had a young college age boarder once who was tragically killed in an accident. I hustled down to his room and disposed of his collection of my Victoria Secret and other such catalogs. For some reason I didn't want his mother to find them.

  6. I'm surprised you didn't mention that model in the Sears catalog who had a little somethin' hanging out the leg of his drawers. I suppose you must have been shopping in a different section...

  8. When I was growing up there was a church in the neighborhood that had a giant dumpster for newspapers and magazines. My best friend and I would climb into that dumpster and search for hours in the hope the some father had tossed out a copy of Playboy. We usually found a copy.

  9. I probably walked or rode my bike a mile to school, but there were no hills involved. I never understood the allure of porn magazines for boys. I had boobs and didn't see anything at all special about them and just didn't understand why boys always wanted to look at them. So I didn't let them. Not for a few years anyway.

  10. My parents used to tell us the same thing. :/ Then when my dad showed me where he used to live as a child and where he went to school, he wasn't lying. Definitely hilarious mention of porn. I don't know if it is her age (she's in her 70's) but recently at my house my mom found a Victoria Secret catalog and was appalled to know that I was looking at that "smut" (her words). It is just a catalog I explained. I guess reading your post today was like an epiphany of sorts. I at least know what the heck she was raging about! :)

  12. It must have been tough. I remember when we moved to LA from Australia in 1979 and were surprised to see that the models wore pullovers under their bras on the bra ads on TV!
I remember as a kid finding my dad's copy of The Happy Hooker and the next day it was gone. He told me years later he panicked and threw it out.
