WORLD CUP

WORLD CUP

Last year at this time the US men were in the fight for the World Cup, the World’s Football (Soccer) Championship.  I watched all the games.  My days were scheduled around the US Teams schedule.  It was very exciting even for this non-soccer fan.

I just found out that this year our US Women’s team is in the finals of the Woman’s World Cup Championship.  I just found out that four years ago our US Women finished second and here they are in the finals again.

I am somewhat ashamed that I did not know our Women’s Team was an International powerhouse.  It is not entirely my fault.  The local bars do not have signs up advertising the Woman’s championship games to lure in patrons as they did last year for the Men.  Don’t spectators of Women’s soccer drink?  The TV does not advertise when the games will be shown and I’m not sure what channel shows the games.  The nightly news barely spends more than a few minutes on the results of all the games, and I have seen almost no coverage on the internet.

Last year the Men almost made it to the quarter finals.  This country was transfixed on the outcome of each game.  Apparently the Women don’t rate the same level of excitement.  Hell, I didn’t even know there was a World Cup championship for the women.  Now I do.

The US Woman are playing in the finals for the WORLD CUP this SUNDAY at 7PM against Japan to be broadcast on FOX.

Be there people.  Get excited.  Let’s root our women on.

Oh, and one of the leading scorers, Carli Lloyd, is from New Jersey so:

GO CARLI!

Happy Fourth of July everybody!

  1. Hi Cranky Man,

Football is huge in most places outside the US so we all knew about the women's World Cup. I'm glad that football is actually taking off over there. The US men's team are not bad and had a much better World Cup than England did (sadly). The women's US team are better. Did you know that they had won the World Cup TWICE? England have never won it. We lost in the semi-finals this year (to a last minute own goal) so hopefully we will finish third.

Anyway, happy 4th July to you and your fellow Americans. Nice to see you are looking after the colonies for us.

    :0)

    Cheers

  3. I'm hooked. But I must go to teen baseball. I wanted to see England play today.
In our newspaper, there was an article about increasing interest in women's soccer.

  4. i don't watch either, but it is sad that the womens' sports don't garner much publicity.

  5. Not into sports Cranky. I do know that there isn't much excitement about what women do in sports for the most part. It's just the way it is.

Have a fabulous day and happy Independence day. ☺

  6. Another of the leading players, Megan Rapinoe, is from my neck of the woods.

  7. Whew, at least you found out about it just in time to see the final! The games have been exciting although I haven't seen them all. My husband is in Japan right now, so it'll be interesting to find out if it's covered much there.

  8. When I was recently in Germany I heard a bit of lighthearted banter about our team not being very good, and i chuckled when we beat Germany to get into the finals. Happy 4th to you and your family.

  9. Happy Independence Day! Maybe you could start a movement demanding the women's games be shown in bars when they are doing this well.

  12. I'm not much into sports, either, but I do find it a bit disappointing that women's sports ranks so lowly. The best soccer player on the US women's team makes less money in one year than Lionel Messi (the Argentinian soccer player) makes in one day.

  13. Well. I did not know that. Lately, I can't even manage to watch the Cardinals on TV every night. I have sports block, I guess.

  14. It is sad that there's a lack of support, although in our area, professional soccer doesn't have much of a following, period.

  15. Wishing the US team much success in their game tonight!! Soccer was really big in San Diego area; not much I've found yet in Prescott. Always an interesting game to watch though. Hope you had a nice 4th!
