LIVERWURST SANDWICH

LIVERWURST SANDWICH
Not the first time I've touched on this subject.  This rerun is from July 2012
A very divisive food, people either love it or it makes them gag.
I had it pretty good growing up.   My family lived in comfortable homes, we never went hungry, we took regular vacations and in general we led a well- heeled solid middle class life.

My pop worked hard to give us that life.   He traveled a lot, worked late hours, and often cut his own vacations short for work.  My dad made sure to come to our events when possible.  He taught me to sail, to bowl and to play golf.  Dad went to all my football games in high school and captured them on 8mm film.

You would think that a son would be happy to reward a dad like this by doing small chores or favors without complaint.

Well I did.

There was one chore that I detested and I guess I was pretty good about not complaining, but it was horrible.

Sometimes when we were watching TV and a commercial came on, my dad would ask for a sandwich.

“Joe, would you get up and make me a sandwich?”

“Sure pop, what do you want?”

Actually I knew what he would want and I shuddered to think of it.

“Just slap some liverwurst on a slice of bread.”

LIVERWURST!  Oh the humanity!

I still don’t really know what liverwurst is, I think it is some kind of pig liver sausage.  It stinks.  It has a pasty consistency.  It looks gross, it smells gross, and pops loved it.  It was all I could do to slap that crap on bread and not lose my dinner.   Just the thought of that smell brings back horrible memories.  The smell lingered, and just by preparing it the smell clung to your person.  There was no escape.

I grew up in a WASP family.  We were not demonstrative.  I don’t think I ever told my father that I loved him.

I did make him liverwurst sandwiches.

  3. I don't like liverwurst and like you would have shuddered over it. I was fortunate in that I told my dad I loved him many times, including the night before he died, although I can't recall him ever saying it back to me. Still, I know he loved me.

  4. I'm going to agree with you on this. Nasty stuff and the smell is the worst part. Hubby loves it, but we never had it in the house. He never passes on a sandwich when we're out boating though. Someone is always making liverwurst sammies somewhere. Yuk!

Have a fabulous day, Joe. ☺

  7. I bought it once last year when I was trying to find weird things to entice the dog into eating. She wasn't impressed, but I can't say that I blamed her. You did love your dad!

  8. I've never seen or smelled it, but I don't eat pate, so I'm sure I wouldn't like it.

  9. Making something stinky for your father was the best way you could express your love. Now i'm very glad no one here likes liverwurst.

  10. My father loved souse meat. It's not bad but liverwurst smells too much like my dog's food. I ate it growing up but not after opening upteen cans of dogfood over the years.

  11. I rather like liverwurst but can't remember the last sandwich I had. Liked mine with onions. That you detested it yet made the sandwich for him was an act of love. He knew.

  14. Oh my gosh, I haven't had it in years, but it was a staple in our house growing up. That with tomatoes on bread. Delicious! (sorry)

You demonstrated love as a verb, making him something he wanted, something that was hard to do because of the scent. People casually toss out "I love you" but don't demonstrate it in any tangible ways. Just saying.

  15. I think it's odd how people shudder and turn up their noses at liverwurst, but happily eat pate (I can't do the accent over the e)which is just liverwurst with a fancy name.
Being German, my parents both ate liverwurst and my older sister loved it too. I hated the stuff, if I had to have some it would be the thinnest smear I could possibly get on my sandwich and I'd cover it with something to take the taste away, like sliced gherkins and cheese. I sometimes wonder if I would like it now that I've grown up and not tasted any for at least 55 years.
I'm sure every liverwurst sandwich you made for your dad told him that you loved him.

  16. Oddly enough, I can eat fried liver and onions with gravy, next to a pile of mashed potatoes. But the liver needs to be sliced very thin, slung into the hot pan turned immediately then served, don't give it a chance to stew and get rubbery tough.

  17. I've never tried it but if it's anything like pate I don't think I'll investigate.

  18. My dad loved that too and so do I! Still. Everyone in my family loves it. It's always a special treat with some Limburger cheese. - I shut the old blog down. I'm over here on Blogger again. :)
