Waiting
And waited.
And waited.
Tick tock, tick
tock…I wasn’t in a hurry, but holy cow, how long does it take at an ATM
machine. Punch in a code, pick an
option, press a button and take your cash.
And waited.
It was at
least ten minutes. This dude was
punching numbers on his phone punching something on the ATM, taking money from
the machine, putting money back in the machine, punching something on his phone,
do it over again…
And waited.
Finally, after
about 15 minutes, which is seven and a half hours in ATM machine waiting time, the
dude was done.
Eleven
seconds later I had my cash and was on the way home.
We left for
the shore and in less than an hour we were at our house (room off the garage of
Mrs. C’s Aunt’s house). We opened the
front door, but there were two locks. We
only had a key for one lock. Mrs. C got
on the phone and we waited.
Left a voice
mail.
And waited.
We finally
got a call back and were given the code to the garage door. It did not work; sea air and electronics do
not do well together.
“Maybe Cousin
Mike will have an answer.” We were told.
We waited to
hear from Cousin Mike.
And waited.
Cousin Mike
did have an answer. It was a really
funny solution that if I posted about it, I would be fed to the sharks.
Really funny
story.
Cannot tell
it.
Sorry.
So, we moved
into our home by the ocean, unpacked and before we left for dinner and food
shopping I had to test the TV cable hook up.
The box said
“booting”, then “Hold”, then “Hold”, then “Hold”. This was No Bueno.
Called the Cable
people and after all kinds of checking and questions it was determined our cable
box was fried, probably from a recent storm.
Get a new box
at the cable store in the morning.
Mrs. C and I
do not do well without TV. I could watch
the Yankee game on the computer and then had to…Gasp…read.
Oh well, the
next morning we went to the store and waited in a short line to get the new box.
And waited.
And waited.
This one
dude was at the desk forever. He kept
asking questions, signing stuff, asked more questions, signed more stuff, read
over twenty pages of instructions/ contracts…
We had to
put quarters in to our parking meter three times.
And waited.
Finally, he
was done and about seventeen seconds later we had our new box and we were headed
home.
The new box
worked. We headed for the beach.
No more
waiting.
We then heard
from a very close friend who has gone through some difficult health procedures
recently. All was well, except there was
a set- back possibly unrelated to the previous issue.
He was in
the ER, waiting for some maybe very scary results.
His wife is
an absolute wreck waiting for the results.
And waiting.
What the
Hell was I complaining about?
Aw, I'm sorry about your friend but up to that point, this post was really funny because I could visualize every "wait" you had to go thru. Enjoy your vacation.
ReplyDeleteBeen there, with both kinds of waiting, and neither are fun.
ReplyDeleteWhen we hear of things like that with your friend, who I hope will be okay, the things that we thought were so important are so trivial. I wish I would learn that lesson earlier in my things I stress about, but I'm a slow learner.
ReplyDeleteHave a great vacation!
betty
I hope your shore vacation is finally off to a good start, and that your friend is okay. Reading this made me almost giddy with joy that I waited (next in line) 15 minutes at my bank Friday, to change a dollar for two rolls of pennies, while the lady at the counter had a fortune counted out to her (I stopped adding it up at $12,000) in 20s and 100s, while the second teller went to lunch, and the drive-thru teller opened up another window to help me (and the five people in line behind me) but didn't have any pennies.
ReplyDeleteI hope your friend gets good news very soon, that's the hardest waiting time of all.
ReplyDeleteI've waited in line for an ATM too, thankfully my bank has one inside out of the weather. I've learned never to wait in line for a teller on pension days, those old people take forever, checking their accounts, deciding how much to get out, chatting with the teller about a million other things, like they had all the time in the world, like it used to be when they were young and no one was in a hurry.
Actually, I think you coped with all that waiting very well. I would have been at screaming pitch from the word Go.
ReplyDeleteI can be impatient, too. Hope your friend is ok!
ReplyDeleteThis is one of your best posts, JoeH. Thank you, and well done. Sometimes we complain when we have to wait ... but there are those whose wait is far more critical.
ReplyDeleteGod bless you. Thanx again.
Nothing like a little perspective. Enjoy the beach.
ReplyDeleteA vacation of waiting. I hope this week is better. It should be very hot and perfect for the beach. Yesterdays game I am certain you would rather have missed. Enjoy you time away!
ReplyDeleteI despise waiting. I actually think waiting for idiot's is worse because I just want to slap them silly. Waiting for medical news is fear. And I dont want to slap them. Hope your friend gets better news.
ReplyDeleteKind of puts it all in perspective doesn't it?
ReplyDeleteThe last part summed up the waiting very well. We have a friend in Hospice right now. We don't mind the waiting either.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your week on the beach. ♪♫♪♫
So sorry about your friend which can really put some things into perspective. Do hope you reconsider the Cousin Mike story though and share.
ReplyDeleteYes - perspective. I'm so sorry about your friend. I was laughing almost to the end. I sincerely hope all is well. Enjoy you vacation.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if the dude at the cable place was the same one at the ATM..maybe? Waiting at the hospital is the worst and I do hope your friend is OK. Enjoy the shore and send some sun our way..it's raining again. I think I'm beginning to mold.
ReplyDeleteFelt as though I was there with you all the way through. Very good accounting of a not so great experience.
ReplyDeleteWe leave this week for vacation. Now I'm fretful!!
Perspective is everything, isn't it? I hope your friend is okay! It seems as if we spend half our lives waiting for something. It does get a little frustrating, sometimes...Glad you were able to get into your summer home and resurrect the cable TV. Happy vacation!
ReplyDeleteI can appreciate both of those perspectives, and it does make our own frustrating 'waits' a bit less vital when we realize we aren't the only people on the planet. It's humbling.
ReplyDeleteI hope your friend is okay...
i am still wondering what the hell was that guy doing inside for so long
ReplyDeletehappy vacations dear Joe !
your untold funny story of waiting made me laugh
waiting can be irritating specially if it is for t.v box or internet connection ,i still remember when we first got wire of landline to have internet connection along the guy who had start the network with code was not coming and my eldest son was so furious about his delaying
i don't know how he made it happen by himself after almost one hour headache ,many years passed but we still recall that day during gathering
Patience is not one of my virtues, either. But waiting on medical test results puts other waiting into sharp perspective, doesn't it - whether it's yours, or someone's you care about.
ReplyDeleteI think you should tell us about the funny solution from your cousin Mike.
