Cruise Control

Cruise Control
Mrs. C loves cruise control.  She claims she gets better gas mileage when she uses cruise control.

I hate cruise control.  Unless I am on a major highway with almost no traffic it is impossible for me to maintain a constant speed.  If I have to keep tapping the break and or adjusting the CC speed, what is the point?

I am convinced that most of the a-hole drivers that tailgate and weave in and out of traffic, do it because they do not want to adjust their cruise control.

I believe this because I see Mrs. C doing it all the time.  No, she does not do the weave thing too much, but she will wait later than I would to slow down when getting close to the car up ahead.  She often will pass cars on the right.  I hate passing cars on the right.

I prefer to drive the right-hand lane and follow the car in front.  If the car in front is driven by a slow-poke that can barely see over the steering wheel, traveling miles below the speed limit, I will pull out and pass, but otherwise I see no reason to hurry.

What cruise control needs, and is probably on more expensive automobiles, is a sensor that automatically slows down when within 40 yards of the car ahead.  With this feature I might use cruise control.

Probably not.

I do not find maintaining a speed manually to be that difficult.  It keeps my head in the game.  Pressing a gas pedal or releasing it is not really that difficult.  To me using cruise control is like asking Alexa to turn up the TV volume…like I can’t do that myself.

Mrs. C disagrees.  She does not like the way I drive.  She thinks I drive too slow and does not feel I pay enough attention.  I disagree.

Mrs. C does the driving when we are together.

So, I have to get used to her using cruise control.  It is not relaxing.  While she glides along, I find myself adjusting an imaginary gas pedal and tapping an imaginary break.

She does get better mileage than I do.

  1. I wonder if it's a woman thing ~ I love cruise control, but Romeo, not so much. I don't use it when I constantly have to reduce speed on a busy road though. And I did read a warning not too long ago that warns against using it when the roads are wet or it's rainy. Apparently it's not uncommon to hydroplane and get yourself in a bit of a pickle.

  2. I always thought cruise control was for the open highway, where you can travel for many miles at the same speed because there aren't stop lights like in the towns and cities. in a city I'd think it would be much easier to ease off the gas and ease on the brakes as needed than to constantly be adjusting an automatic control. I don't know anyone who worries about mileage.

  3. I hate cruise control! I never use it. Not even when I was driving on the highway to the city every day for work. Hick uses it too much. I stomp the imaginary brake AND grab the OH-BLEEP handle. Cruise control makes Hick stay in the fast lane, backing up traffic, rather than getting over to ride up on other people's bumpers, and let drivers cruising faster around him.

  4. Don't like cruise control. I like to be in "control" of the vehicle myself. Hubby uses it for longer trips and taught son to use it on longer trips especially when traveling through areas where one might potentially have speed traps around oneself. Hubby is a very aggressive driver. He has to be with his long commutes on major freeways with "idiots" driving all around him. I close my eyes a lot when we are driving together. Don't worry, he is the driver and I'm just the passenger, that's why I can close my eyes.

  5. Cruise control wasn't my thing, I preferred to be the boss when driving. Still, it takes all sorts to make drivers.

  6. I'm like you. I don't see the point unless you have the highway to yourself, which is never.

  7. Cruise control is useless in the Ozarks. Two lane roads abound and you barely go a tenth of a mile before entering a sharp curve. Sometimes they come up every car length. I do use it on the few 4 lane roads around the state as it is too easy to speed when being faced with all that straight road.

  8. I dislike cruise control but also very much dislike those guys in the right hand lane going so damn slow. So I pass you and think, what is wrong with him? It sounds like I drive like Mrs. C without the cruise control. I like to be in control so I can't use it. I could never get in a self driving car either. I would always be fearful because damn it I like control! LOL

  9. You need to update Joe. My 2016 Ford does slow down when using cruise control and following a slowpoke. When I indicate and pull out it automatically speeds up again.

  10. I started driving in 1971 and have NEVER used cruise control, but then, I'm a speed demon. Highway right lane huggers driving like turtles, are a pet peeve.😆

  11. There are so many A-hole drivers. Everyone is so angry. I don't use the cruise control either, but hubby does.

Have a fabulous day, Joe. 😎

  13. SWMBO and I are just the opposite of you and Mrs. C. I love the cruise control and use it all the time. She rarely turns it on. 'Course I drove a lot more than she does.

  14. Cruise control is for long distances in my car. Also for those times when i just know there is an officer waiting on one of those roads around here where the limit is 35 and it should be higher. Several times i've had the cruise set at 35 just to make sure i don't accidentally speed, and i've been glad.

  15. I don't use the cruise control either, though I'm probably in the "fast driver" category. Another thing I rarely use is the back up camera. Guess I've been driving long enough to be fixed in relying on the basics.

  16. i can imagine how it feels when someone steals your deserving seat
how nice of you to handover to her and let her drive ,she drives fast and manage in less millage

i think you drive more wisely i say (could not find the more specific word because i also find right side preferable

  17. I don't use cruise control either, for mostly the same reasons. I think it leads to people not paying attention too.
