IT IS URGENT THAT YOU CALL

IT IS URGENT THAT YOU CALL

My cell phone is registered for the “Do not call” list, and yet every week I get several unsolicited calls.  The one that annoys me the most is the credit card call.

“Hello, this is blah, blah, blah calling about your credit.  There is nothing wrong with you credit, but it is urgent that you call us at xxx-xxx-xxxx in order to receive our low, low rates.”

What really bothers me is that I know what calls like this do to our oldest senior citizens of which I am almost one.  They will hear.

“Hello, this is blah, blah, blah calling about blah, blah, blah.  There is something wrong about blah, blah, blah, blah IT IS URGENT THAT YOU CALL xxx-xxx-xxxx!!! In order to blah, blah, blah.”

The extra annoying thing about this call is when I call xxx-xxx-xxxx to bust their balls, NO ONE ANSWERS!!!

  1. I have put all three of our numbers on do not call, but I was told if we have a relationship with an entity (have donated to someone or something) they will not be taken off the list.

  2. My friend who used to be the attorney in our state AG's office who handled Do Not Call complaints said those credit card calls are really tough to do anything about. They all come from out of the US, primarily South America, so even if they track the origin there isn't any way to prosecute them.

  3. OMGosh I hear ya! I don't know what good the Do Not Call list is either. My calls went from "Let us come and waterproof your basement" I have a crawl space, no basement. It didn't stop the calls. Then came the "Let us come and give you home security" I have that too. Even when I told them that was covered by Smith and Wesson, they still keep calling. :/

  4. This credit card calls are getting more and more frequent. And you're right about not being able to reach a real person. I know how to screw a person on the phone but it's hard getting satisfaction from a machine.

  5. Wasn't there a Twilight Zone episode about this? Wait a minute, that was about a dead grandmother who spoke to her grandson on a toy phone. Never mind...

  6. Sort of in line with what Tabor said, I've heard that if you call them back that creates an "ongoing'relationship" with them and then they don't have to stop calling.

I just check caller ID and if it is from and area code where I know I don't know anyone, I just don't answer.

  7. I hate those guys! When they call here if it's a person, I always put a child on the phone and tell them it's Santa or the Easter bunny. The kid talks till the person finally hangs up. Or I try to sell them something back. Once we told them that we had tomales fresh from the oven 12 for 10 bucks. I was laughing so hard by the time they hung up. I actually look forward to those calls now. It's a beautiful thing being just as annoying as they are.

  9. I think one of the bravest things people do is answer the phone. Even with the advent of Caller ID, answering the phone takes courage. You never really know what is on the other line of that call. Our most senior generation really does not see ignoring a call as an option, which makes them more susceptible to the criminal element. I wish we could choose what mail flyers we receive, what phone calls we receive, and eliminate the junk. My time is limited any way, why do I have to waste it dealing with something I did not want any way. Joe, you bring up some really good points with a very frustrating issue.
