Be Nissan You Later

Be Nissan You Later

WOW!  We won a 55-inch Smart TV.  No really.  The local Nissan dealer sent us a scratch-off to celebrate their latest sale.  They had potential prizes of wireless ear buds, a 55-inch Smart TV, $1500 or $15000.

Mrs. C scratched and it showed we won the TV!

She called the required number; they checked the ID number on the scratch-off and confirmed we were a winner.  We made an appointment to pick up our prize on Friday at 1 PM.

“There must be a catch.”

“Nope, I called and they verified the number.”

“Let me see that scratch off thing, there has to be some fine print saying we had to also buy a car, or stay at the dealers for the whole week-end, or…”

“Nope, there is no fine print anywhere, we won a 55-inch smart TV.”

So, on Friday we went to the dealer.  I was still somewhat skeptical, but the scratcher did indicate we won, and it was not like we just won ear buds, it was the TV.

We even started to argue where we would put the TV.

“55 inches is big, will it fit in the basement?”

“The basement TV is 40, but the new TV’s are narrower around the actual screen, I think it will fit even if it covers up some of the cabinet.”

“We should probably put it in the guest room and replace the 28 inch TV.”

“Why, it is too big for that room.”

“But Casey wants a smart TV for when she visits.”

“That is hardly ever, why have the best TV where it will hardly ever get used?”

“We’ll argue about it when we see how large it is.”

When we walked into the dealership we asked where do we go to see Mr. Green.  “Mr. Green”, that should have been a warning sign right there.  We were directed to a waiting area with about 17 other people waiting for “Mr. Green.”

“You all won a TV too?”

“Yup” “Yup” "Yup” "Yup"…

I was starting to smell fish.

Some guy came out of “Mr. Green’s” office with a small package of wireless ear buds.

“You guys here for the TV?

“Yup” “Yup” "Yup” "Yup"…

Sniff sniff; Rotten fish.

Then Mrs. C opened up the scratch-off.  It was sealed in a way that was almost indiscernible.  Inside was the small print I could not find earlier.

The scratch-off allowed the holder to enter the contest drawing.  The odds of winning were:

Ear buds 99,997 / 100,000

Smart TV 1 / 100,000

$1500 1 / 100,000

$15,000 1 / 100,000

The cards were sent to everyone in an 80-mile radius of the dealer.

“This is bull shit, let’s go.”

“Wait, you are so impatient.”

“Yes, I am, and we don’t need ear buds.”

“We might win the TV.”

“I’m waiting in the car, at least I can listen to the radio.”

About 30 minutes later Mrs. C came out with a box of ear buds.

“I had to tell the guy, not Mr.  Green by the way, that we couldn’t afford a new car until next year.  He offered an interest free loan for a year, I told him I’d need to wait till you got out of Jail first.  He said good luck and gave me the ear buds.”

“That’s an hour of my life I’ll never get back.”

“This time we’re both jerks…but I will use the ear buds.”

I never liked Nissan anyway.

  1. LOL; we have a Nissan Versa Note and a Nissan Rogue. But in all fairness we bought them not for what we could/couldn't win but because hubby wanted a car with high gas mileage for his 100 mile round trip daily commute (Versa has been good for that) and he liked the Rogue's gas mileage. Nissan does keep calling to see if we want to trade in the Rogue (won't right now). Kind of like the people who call/text to see if we want to sell either one of our houses. I tell them not for at least 20 years. There's always fine print. Its just a matter of finding it.

  2. I like how Mrs. C decided you were BOTH jerks, after she pushed to go pick up the free TV, while you were skeptical and wanted more verification. Sorry, Mrs. C, but I've gotta give Joe a break on this one!

My favorite part is: "I told him I’d need to wait till you got out of Jail first."

  3. Hahaha! Aw Joe, I honestly feel for ya--that was pretty sneaky on their part. But it did make for an entertaining story :)

  4. I never did trust offers such as the one you describe. But one thing for sure is made a terrific blog entry. Better luck next time, my friend hahaha.

  5. Firms like these never learn. It is counter-productive to send adverts like the one you got. Even if I liked the product, I would not buy it on principle that they wasted my time.

Only this morning, one such firm rang the phone and woke me up at 10:30am ... can you imagine ... at 10:30am; trying to interest me in their product. I told them the first thing that came to mind ... which is not repeatable here.

    God bless.

  6. That seems really shady for a dealership.

  7. That was a play on words for sure.

Have a fabulous day, Joe. 😎

  8. I think the old adage if you think it's too good to be true it probably is, applies here.
I'm sorry you lost out on a new smart TV. I wouldn't buy a car from them just because of this lousy scam they are running and being the witch with a capital B that I am I would have made sure I told them that. Sorry about your new TV.

  9. I have a Nissan Altima. We bought it new 7 years ago next month and it still has not reached 40,000 miles on the odometer. The dealership keeps telling me they want to buy it but I don't think so.

  10. Ha ha I so know what you went through. Mine was only a $100 dollar gift card but the same run around at Toyota. Loved Mrs. C's comment about waiting till you get out of jail:))

  11. Just think you really didn't need a Tv anyway, smile' I hate it when they send out stuff like that just to get you to show up hoping you will buy a new car. Yes I get them all the time and once the number showed I had won a car, I didn't need a new car so I toss it in the garbage can. It was just another way to get me to show up and hoping I would buy a new car.

  12. My Daddy used to say that there was no such thing as a free lunch.

  13. I hate those scratch off tickets where the "prize" is fantastic, too good to be true, so I used to read all the fine print on them and discover the real truth. These days I just throw them straight in the bin without even looking. Just for future reference, 55 inches is the diagonal size of the screen, not including the frame. Just in case you ever get one and don't know where it might fit.

  14. That totally blows and I hate that every place has some kind of a gimmick. I just make a mental note to never do business there.

  15. okay i am not gonna cry

i started to be envious and what we got here ,only ear bud

that is not easy to swallow dear Joe
but things happens ,yes this is true
keep your spirit high ,you can win probably :)

  16. Mine was $500 Best Buy card. An hour drive there, two hours getting hustled and hassled, another hour home with a $2 bill. I won't buy my next car there after they complained what it cost them to send out the scratchcards and I owed it to them to buy a car now.

  17. What a bum deal. If that's the game they play, i want to go home.
