Supermarket Hide and Seek

Supermarket Hide and Seek

Thank God for cell phones.  Without them I would still be caught up in a game of supermarket hide and seek with Mrs. C.

Oh, don’t act like you don’t know what I am taking about.  If you have ever shopped with someone at a supermarket, or especially if you have children, you have played supermarket hide and seek.

“I’m going to the courtesy desk to see if they have cigars.”

“Ok, I‘ll be in the ice cream section looking for toasted almonds.”

After purchasing some cigars I went hunting for Mrs. C.

What could go wrong?  How could you get lost?

Easy!

Each of us on one side of the supermarket, looking down the aisles, somehow you never are looking down the same aisle at the same time.  Cross an aisle to the other side of the supermarket and of course, Mrs. C has done the same.

Up and down the aisles…crossing over to the front and then back of the supermarket there is a law of probability that says you will never make eye contact.  You might see the same lady with the annoying three-year-old about seventeen times, or the old dude with the gigantic beer belly multiple times, but you will not see or cross paths with the person you are looking for.

“Siri, call Karen.”

“Calling Karen.”

B-ring, b-ring “Hello.”

“What aisle?”

“Ten by the tuna fish.”

“Don’t move.”

If it were not for cell phones we would be lost until closing time.

  1. Oh how well I remember this. I can laugh at other people getting lost in supermarkets but it's a different matter when it happens to me. Joe and I lost each other so often I threatened to put him on a lead!

  2. You are not alone, though I guess you are when it happens.

  3. Seems to me it would be so much easier to just stand by the courtesy desk after buying your cigars and wait for Mrs C to come that way. Of course, your way could be fun too if you both like hide and seek.

  4. Oh yes.....I've learned to never be separated from the hubs in the grocery store. He can't see worth a darn and I can't move very well....it's way too much hassle to play hide and seek.

  5. "Two ships passing in the night." I completely understand. I once spent 10 minutes looking for the Mrs before I realized she was waiting for me out in the car. ;)

  6. My husband is 6'6" and I still lose him in the grocery store - too right you are about supermarket hide 'n seek - used to stress me out (okay, annoy me) until the miracle of mobile phones.

  7. I never allow the separation unless I have a partial list of things to grab whilst doing the look-back. I'm gonna hit 75% of the aisles while looking so might as well have a couple arm loads of goods to help get out 'sooner'.

  8. We do this too, but haven't used the cellphone to find each other yet. I'm looking forward to that. You two crack me up.

    Have a fabulous day. ☺

  9. Well I have been there and must say phones could take a lot of the stress but also the exercise out of our lives.

  11. Heeheehee! Sweetie used to not understand how i could disappear at the supermarket, and i’d know where he was, in fact be following him, and he couldn’t find me anywhere. It’s a fun game!

  12. I used to play this game with my boys in Walmart, sending them off to get specific items. It was a nice period of peace and quiet while they were on their individual quests. They always found me, though...

These days, I don't know if I'd want them out of my sight. I rarely go shopping with Hick, but I'm pretty good at losing him in a casino. We always set up a time and place to reunite, since cell phones often don't get good reception inside.

  13. Been there, done that. We just played this game yesterday, and then I accused my husband he just wanted to get FitBit steps in to beat me (I was pushing the grocery cart and steps do not get counted when you do that). Ha!

  14. Omgosh. This is like shopping with my sister who never carries her phone with her. It's so frustrating. I used to walk the whole store looking for her now I just check out and wait on a bench.
