ROTC

ROTC

Fishducky recently blogged about her Husband, Bud, being an officer in the army after going through ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corp) in college.

My first year in college I learned that ROTC was required for two years.  Even if you had no intention of serving in the army, freshman and sophomores were required to take ROTC.

I had no idea.  I did not like the idea.

I had enough trouble with calculus for dummies, a required course in religion and a foreign language; all subjects liberal arts students had to take and that I never expected to use.  I really did not want to learn to march, salute and shoot.  Remember “Animal House?”

It turned out that before entering college my doctor gave me a physical exam which showed I had a heart murmur.  The college physician gave me a test and could not find a heart murmur, and none has ever been detected since.  Still he gave me a choice of skipping ROTC and taking gym instead.

I opted for gym.

Our gym class enrollees were all ROTC rejects.  We took archery, which I sucked at, constantly ripping my arm with the bow string, golf, basketball and football.  I was a decent athlete in high school; I should have excelled in this group of diabetics, fat people and cripples.

I was ok, but the best athlete in the group was a kid with one and a half arms, the result of a thalidomide pregnancy.  How this kid could shoot an arrow, swing a golf club, and catch a football with one arm and a flipper was amazing.  His basketball skills were incredible.  He could fire up a swish from anywhere on the court and dribbled circles around the defense.

I never learned to shoot an arrow, I am still only an average golfer, in football I could block but not catch and throw.  As a basketball player I perfected the air-ball.

I didn’t learn to march, salute, or shoot a gun, but I sure did learn to respect the incredible things a handicapped person can do when he sets his mind to it.

Probably one of the best lessons I learned in college.

Tomato Update

Tomato Update

I drove home from the shore today to play some golf.  It is about a 45 minute drive.  Lots of people like to make fun of New Jersey with that “What Exit?” crap, but how many people can drive to the ocean in less than an hour?

Anyway.

I stopped at the house to pick up my clubs and before going to the course I checked in on first Mrs. Cranky and then “ Topsy” the tomato plant renamed from Ralph II.

Topsy is doing well:

Coming up from the ground is Topsy’s cousin “Groundy”

Wait, look closely at Topsy:

That’s right, Topsy is giving birth!

I am so proud!!

Ahh, Quiet

Ahh, Quiet

It is the fifth of July.  Yesterday we had a zillion visitors, friends and relatives.  It was a great beach day followed by an Italian feast (double the amount of food that a group of people could possibly consume because if people go home without leftovers, the party was a failure.) Afterwards we shot off about $200 worth of fireworks in 10 minutes and then watched the big spenders throw a real show.

It was a great day.  It followed several days of three sons, a step-daughter, a daughter-in-law and two young-uns all in a small two bedroom apartment.  People slept on pull outs and blowups.  They came and went, some stayed out really late, young-uns up at the crack of dawn.  We steamed crabs boiled corn and bbq’d like crazy.  There is one small bathroom; how we survived I am not sure.

Now it is the fifth of July.  One son is back in Mass., one son is on his way back to California, another with wife and tots is headed for Pennsylvania.  Step-daughter is moving into a new apt in NYC, and Mrs. Cranky is helping.  She then goes to work and will not be back to the shore until Friday.

I am all by myself.  No sons, steps, in-laws, grands or wife.  It is quiet at last.

I can watch whatever I want on TV.  I can finally play a little on my guitar.  I made a nice lunch from left-over’s, kicked back and had a beer, strummed a little guitar while watching  “The Peoples Court.”

It is quiet, it is heaven.  The beach looks nice, no crowd at all.  I can read.  I have internet.  It is quiet.

I could go out to dinner later.  Maybe have a nice glass of wine and a good cigar.  It is quiet.
Fact is it is too quiet.

Friday is only a few days away.
