A NEW TRADITION

A NEW TRADITION
There is talk of ending the tradition of daylight savings time.  I have always wondered why we have this strange system.  Spring forward, fall back, but why?  I’ve heard it had something to do with farmers and farming or school kids going to school and safety or something, but WTF?  The cows don’t know what time it is and if it is dark when the kids go to school, change school hours not the clocks.
Anyway, as much as I have historically disliked daylight savings time, especially when I had to spring forward and I needed that hour of sleep, I have discovered this year, a new tradition.
The changing of the clock.
This Saturday, Mrs. C and I were up late watching TV.  This was not unusual; we often stay up late and sleep in late.  I’m retired and she works at night.  So, it was now 1:55 on the cable clock and Mrs. C asked,
“If the clocks turn back is it at 2:00?”
“I believe so.”
“So then, at 2:00 the cable clock will not go to 2:00 it will just go from 1:59 to 1:00?”
“Yeah…I guess.”
“I’ve never seen that.”
“Well then we shall see it tonight.”
So we waited and watched New Year’s Eve like.  We stared at that digital time piece intently.

1:59
Silly as it seems I was starting to get excited, when Mrs. C decided to search for a new TV show.  We were watching the cable “On Demand” feature, and when she started her search the time went from 1:59 to vod (video on demand).
“No!! Go back quick we’ll miss the change!”
Mrs. C quickly hit “back.”  The clock once again displayed 1:59 and then we counted down 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1…1:00.
The display went from 1:59 to 1:00 and we cheered, kissed and hugged.
A new tradition is born, and at my age you take your excitement where you can.  
Politicians, please leave my daylight savings time alone. 
I am looking forward to seeing the time jump from 1:59 to 3:00 this spring.

  1. LOL, I love your and Mrs. Cranky's new tradition and I wish I lived in a state that recognizes the changing of the clocks; sadly we don't in Arizona. Makes me almost wish to move back to some place that does (not really).

    Great new tradition! May it only get better from season to season!

  3. A two hour jump? Crikey! I find changing clock times a real chore and without fail twice a year I wish I had fewer timepieces to change.

  5. I never though about the clock on the receiver changing. I have an "atomic" clock that receives its signal from the west coast. However, the clock seems to change at its own convenience. I caught it "springing ahead" one year, and watching the hand move around was neat. Yes, I have analog clocks wherever possible. This year I looked up and the clock said 8:00, not 9:00. Someone jumped the gun.

  11. I have a Casio watch that is solar powered and receives a signal every day from an "atomic clock" in Colorado that keeps me spot on time. And just like you said, it updated automatically. I LOVE the "fall back" part, but I would just as soon pass on the "spring forward" part. But they never consult with me, so....

  14. Now that was cool. Wish I could have seen it but probably won't happen for me unless the make the change happen at 9:00. Feel sorry for shift workers who have to work that same hour all over again.

  15. I am now eagerly awaiting Spring! And here I thought I wouldn't have any "excitement" in my life after election day. Who knew! As for election day and the day after, I'm filling it with music, DVDs, long walks, and hot fudge sundaes. I'm staying as far away from reality as possible.

  17. I read an article in the Sunday Times by a man who not only wants to abolish Daylight Savings Time but he wants to abolish TIME ZONES and put the entire world on UCT, i.e. London time. Now that would be a real change.

  19. I was up! Why didn't I think to watch the clock on my DISH program guide?

    I just changed the time in T-Hoe today. It was not as easy as when I had The Pony here to do it for me. Good thing the button had a picture of a clock on it...
