No Interest Loan!

No Interest Loan!

A Cranky PSA

For

CRANKY OPINION SATURDAY

The following PSA is a cranky interpretation which may or may not be correct. I’m pretty sure I am correct and this is intended for my less sophisticated readers based on my recent understanding of something that had me completely fooled.  Any corrections to this understanding are welcome.

As a graduate from an actual accredited college, with a degree in economics many years before the internet,  I consider myself to be an expert in the science of economics.  Does a “C” average or less make one an expert?  It does if you say it does, so…

Anyway

I recently became aware of something which almost cost this economic expert a boat load of money.  I was misunderstanding a no interest loan.

Fortunately, Mrs. C, who has an associates degree in computer stuff from DeVry the school with the Fighting Mice mascot, straightened me out.

Have you ever wondered how companies offer products for sale with no interest for one year?  Sometimes even no payment and no interest for one year.  Guess, what?  There is a catch.

It is not a “no” interest loan, it is a “deferred” interest loan.  What does that mean?

Well, when you sign up for this loan it is a salesman who explains it and it may be explained incorrectly with a lot of fast talking involved. The fine print, where you sign that you understand the loan, is pretty clear, but you are not encouraged to read the fine print carefully.

If you read the fine print carefully or have someone with an associates degree in computer stuff from DeVry with you, you will know that:

The loan is interest free as long as you pay it off completely in one year.

The monthly payments they demand, if any, will in no way cover the loan in one year.

If you miss or are late with a single payment the interest is no longer deferred.

You may think, as I did, that the first year is interest free and then after that you have to pay the interest on the remaining balance?  Oh no.  The interest is deferred.  That means that after one year if the loan is not completely payed off, or if your last payment is even one day late, you owe all interest on that year that would have been due on every payment.

In other words, all the interest you did not have to pay was deferred, and you now DO HAVE TO PAY!!

Last year we had to replace our heating and air system.  Well we didn’t have to replace them, but they were broken and repair was going to be expensive and not guaranteed.

This was a costly proposition, one that I was prepared to pay for in one very painful lump until the salesman offered a no interest free loan for one year.  I thought, hmmm, no interest versus losing the interest on the large lump sum.  Why not take the year to pay it off?

See what an economic expert I am.  Pay no interest while still making interest, a no brainer.

My last payment was due this January.  I was set to finish payments in January.  Mrs. C said I should pay it all off in December just in case there is any glitch in the payment.*

“Why, how much interest could there be on the last payment?”

She then explained how “deferred” interest works.

“Woah…I’ll bet a lot of people that cannot pay off the loan in a year make a purchase based on the no interest for a year concept!”

“Probably, and if they expect to pay off most in the first year, they may not care much about the interest rate.”

“Good point!”

I made my last payment one month early and confirmed it was complete, so thank you Mrs. C, and kudos to the Fighting Mice.

Are banks and businesses that offer these loans guilty of breaking the “Truth in Lending” laws?

Probably not, but they do not go out of their way to be sure the borrower understands.  I know because if they fooled this sophisticated “C” student in the science of economics, they are fooling of lot of other people.

End of PSA.

*(Know when your deferred interest period ends. The front page of your bill shows when the deferred interest period ends. Your deferred interest period might have a different end date than your regular monthly payment due)
I call this a trap!!

Strange…well different anyway

Strange…well different anyway

I may have mentioned in a previous post or two that my wife sometimes can be a little…er…strange?  Yeah, strange would be the right word.  Not strange in a bad way, strange in different way.

For instance, she does not scoop pudding with her spoon, she dips the spoon straight down into the pudding, pulls it out and eats whatever sticks to it.  It works, but it does take forever to finish desert.  They may flick the restaurant lights on and off and start stacking the chairs and she is still dipping.

She does not like to walk on a sidewalk.  If she can, she would rather walk in the street.  I have no idea why, she just does.  I remember, “Step on a crack, break your mothers back.”  Apparently, she heard it as “Step on the walk, people will talk.”
Then there is the can not wear glasses thing.  She does not need them for distance or reading, but she will not wear sunglasses or even those 3-D things at the movies.  She will hold them up to her eyes but, "I don't like the way they feel on my nose...it is just weird."  I agree with the weird part.

These are just a few examples of the many things that makes Mrs. C so special, and I don’t mean special in the little yellow bus kind of way, but just well, special in a different kind of way.

I thought I knew all her “special” traits, but today I learned a new one.  Maybe it is just me, but I think this is a little strange…you be the judge.

Today we were driving to the store and she had the Beatles channel on.  She was singing along to “Octopus Garden” obviously enjoying it when suddenly she just changed channels with that little button on the steering wheel.

“I want to be, under the sea, in an octopus…(click) Everyday, it’s a getting closer, going faster than a roller…(click) Down the street, singing doo wah ditty, ditty, dum diddy…(click) And frolicked in the Autumn mist in a land…”

“What the hell are you doing?”

“Trying to find a song I like.”

“What the Hell, if you don’t like a song why are you singing along like you are into it?”

“Because I know the lyrics.”

“But you obviously don’t like the lyrics or the song.”

“Sometimes I don’t know I don’t like a song until I sing a little of it.”

That makes zero sense to me.  But then I scoop my pudding, so…

Alarming Situation

Alarming Situation

Coming home from shopping and chores with Mrs. C, I entered the house deftly unlocking the door while propping open the storm door with my butt and holding packages in one hand and a heavy plastic bag of groceries in my teeth.

Beep, beep, beep

Crap, the damn alarm, I hate that thing, but Mrs. C insists on setting it even if we are away for just a minute.  Granted the house was once broken into. The burglars ignored the alarm-warning sign out front and the alarm siren when they broke in.  They only scurried away through the back door without any loot when Mrs. C startled them when she started to enter the home.

Not sure how good the damn thing is in deterring professionals, but still the alarm must be used.

Anyway

Beep, beep, beep.

I entered the code.  Oops, punched the wrong number.  I reentered the correct code and the beep, beep, beep stopped.  Thirty seconds later all hell broke loose!

Lights flashed, alarm rang out
EEOW, EEOW, EEOW…
Mrs. C was following me in the door,

“Get the phone, the company will be calling soon, the password is Brick-a-brack,  I’ll shut down the alarm.”

EEOW, EEOW, EEOW…

The phone rang,

“Yes, I accidently hit the wrong code and the alarm went off…What? Hagy…H A G Y.  Yes, I know the owner’s name is Barboe, that’s my wife…Because she didn’t want to go through the hassle of changing her name…no, I don’t mind, and”
EEOW, EEOW, EEOW…
could you just shut the thing off?”... “What? You have to send me to customer service? But you called because of the alarm, why can’t you shut it down?”
EEOW, EEOW, EEOW…

“Ok, ok transfer me.”

EEOW, EEOW, EEOW…

“Hello, yes, my alarm went off accidentally and we can’t shut it down” … “Hagy” … “Yes, I know, she won’t change her name” … “no I don’t really mind, I do mind this alarm!”

 EEOW, EEOW, EEOW…

“What, I can’t hear you with this alarm, please talk to my wife.”

“Joe, go upstairs and get the fob out of the drawer, we have to hit a reset.”

“You know I’ll never find that thing, I can’t find a water glass on my night table.”

EEOW, EEOW, EEOW…

“I’ll get it! Talk to the service lady.”

EEOW, EEOW, EEOW…

“Yes, my wife is getting it now” … “Barboe” … “Hagy”… “I KNOW!! She doesn’t want to change it.  OK she reset the system” …

“Karen, she says punch in the code again.”

EEOW, EEOW, EE.

“Finally,” … “Yes, it stopped, thank you”… “I know, maybe I should change my name!”

I hate the damn alarm!
