SPECIAL OFFER FROM THE GUITAR STORE

SPECIAL OFFER FROM THE GUITAR STORE
Some readers may be aware that this cranky old man has been attempting to learn how to play the guitar.  I initially made some progress with an old relatively inexpensive Yamaha.

I progressed enough to upgrade my instrument to a low end, made in Mexico with fake wood, Martin Guitar.  I love the size, sound and playability of this less expensive (still not cheap) Martin, and vowed to reward myself on the big 7-0, if I continued to practice and improve, with a more expensive, made in the USA, all mahogany with a sitka spruce top, higher end Martin Guitar…The 000-17sm.

I am pretty sure this upgrade will not sound much better with my strumming and picking than my current guitar.  I doubt if I could tell that it plays any easier.  Why do I want it?  Why do old codgers buy a fancy Corvette?  Are they going to get any luckier with women?  No, they just want a fancy sporty car.

That is why I want the fancy Martin.  I don’t expect to get lucky with women…hell, Mrs. Cranky won’t even listen to me play.

I just want it!

I am going to turn 70 dammit, and this guitar is a hell a lot cheaper than a Corvette.  Still, it ain’t cheap and when the Guitar store sent me a coupon as a valued customer for 15% off any non-sale item in the store I thought maybe I would not wait for my 70th if I could buy now and save several hundred dollars.

Turns out there are a few exclusions and limitations to the coupon.

Exclusions and limitations for the 15% off single non-sale item offer:

15% off single non-sale item. Not to be used in conjunction with other coupons, promotions or offers. No cash value. Excludes discounted and clearance items, price matches, used gear, tax/shipping charges, scratch and dent, vintage equipment, Gift Cards, String Club and Stick Club memberships and musician services (Pro Coverage, GC Garage & GC Studios). No cash value. Offer valid through date displayed on coupon.

  1. Apparently you can get 15% off only if you buy a guitar that's not made by ANYBODY!!

  2. Forget the coupons and splurge, you deserve it! Besides, it's not a Corvette, right? ;) Still keeping my fingers crossed for a video of you playing. :)

  3. I bet they chuckled as they put that 'discount offer' together!

  4. Forget Guitar Center! Go snoop around at local music stores and find a Martin someone has gently used and now wants to get a few bucks out of. That's how Sweetie has gotten every piece of his gear.

  5. Tell me you cut and pasted that.

  6. I cannot believe the profit margin is so low they cannot give 15% off for a limited time. I also cannot believe they carry such a range of inventory. I guess I don't know a whole lot about music stores except they fix flutes and trombones (for a fee).

  7. I think you are safer getting the guitar and not the Corvette. The other day, it wasn't a Corvette, but another type of racing car; we were pulled up at the red light waiting. The sports car was to the right of us. You could tell it was new, still have the paper plates on instead of the regular ones. Guy must not have been paying attention; car starts to roll back and hits the car behind him (mildly because we were stopped at a red light). Owner of the hit car gets out and starts cussing up a storm. Owner of the sports car gets out; older man with an embarrassed look on his face. No damage to either car, they drive away when it turns green. Safer buying a guitar. Just take good care of it.

    betty

  8. You're 65 in the sidebar. :)

  9. That is quite the list. Not that 70 even smacks a little of old age but I think it's so neat when people take up an instrument as they mature. I always said I would learn to play the flamenco guitar when I was too old to dance. I do have the guitar, crying in the case, waiting to be played because so far, I haven't felt too old to dance. LOL
Congrats on the coming age of 70. Trust me, life is just beginning.

  10. BUY THE EXPENSIVE GUITAR.

I'm saving for a $1,600 bass, and I'll probably never play well enough to warrant spending that kind of money. But whatevs. It's pretty.

Hope you have a splendid birthday!

  11. Yep Martin is on the list. That was a lot of work printing up a coupon that excluded well....everything. Buy the Martin Cranky. You only live once.

    Have a fabulous day. ☺

  12. I've spent my entire adult life pining away for a Martin D28, but I had kids instead. My current guitar is a Seagull; nice instrument, especially for the price. But I've been dropping hints to my kids in advance of my upcoming (in a few months) 60th, re the D28. . .

  13. Criminy, that is like the list of side effects for most medicines. I'm with Fran on this one. Forget that store and just go for it somewhere else.

  14. I hate it when stores send out coupons you can't use because everything in the store is ten percent off and the forty percent off coupon doesn't apply to anything on sale. But if I were you I'd buy that guitar anyway. You've earned it!

  15. Really? Less than a corvette? Well then, it's a bargain, with or without a coupon.

  16. I'm curious as to what you can buy with this coupon. Do they sell Kleenex in this store???

Whenever I wanted something expensive and a bit outside my budget, I would make a lot of inexpensive meals. As a matter of fact, the running joke in our family always was that if there was a lentil dish more than twice a week on the dinner table, it was because "...mom is saving up for a new camera."

  17. Get the guitar! Don't make me come out there! I am not in a mood to drink dirty-water cocktails, as is the New Jersey custom. Get the guitar!

  18. But wait! If you order quickly, we'll give you an extra pick, absolutely free! (shipping and handling charge of $17.95, of course)
