WHISPER TALK

WHISPER TALK
I know I've already posted about this way back in December, but dammit it annoys me.  It annoys me enough that here I go again!

So Mrs. Cranky was watching another movie where the characters “whisper talk.”  All the soap opera type TV shows she watches also do the whisper talk.  I don’t get it.  Do people whisper talk in real life?

Apparently when you whisper talk it conveys powerful feelings.  When angry, the characters whisper talk loudly.  That doesn’t make any sense to me.  Why would you whisper loudly?

All I know is I can’t hear what the frig they are saying.  I have to constantly fiddle with the volume.

When the characters are in love they whisper extra softly.  If Mrs. Cranky did that with me it would not work.

“I love you.”

“WHAT?”

Sometimes they whisper softly and then reach a loud whisper crescendo.   This is usually to convey a threat.

“I swear as God is my witness if you ever come around here again I will kill you with my bare hands.”

I don’t get the whisper talk.  People don’t whisper talk in real life.  People whisper when they don’t want anyone else to hear them.  People whisper in libraries.  They whisper in class.  They whisper when they are hiding; that all makes sense.

On TV and the movies, people whisper when no one is around for miles.  They whisper in their own homes, they whisper out on the ocean, they whisper in the desert.  Somehow whisper talking sounds more caring, more sincere, and more real than normal talking.  Except no one whisper talks in real life.

Do they?

Maybe I just can’t hear them.

  1. i hate that, too! if i try to watch tv while i exercise (only an occasional experience), there are only certain programs i've taped that will allow it. anything that mumbles, whispers, blah, blahs, i won't watch while i sweat.

  3. If someone whisper talks in real life I assume that have an emotional disorder. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

  4. I haven't noticed this whispering thing yet, but now that you mention it I'll probably start spotting it everywhere.

  5. At my age whispering is not a good idea if you want me to hear what you are saying. I'm with you on this one.

    Have a fabulous day. :)

  6. I had my hearing checked because of low talkers. My hearing is fine, dammit.

  7. Ha ha, yes true! As annoying as when they talk facing their companion instead of watching the road while driving a car, or failing to turn on lights so I can't see what the hell is going on

  8. The whispering doesn't seem to bother me that much. I just turn up the volume. What ticks me off are the mumblers and people who slur their words or draw them together, as if there were no spaces between words. I constantly rewind (can you say "rewind" when it's digital?) to try and figure out what people said.

My husband has similar problems, only his are with foreign movies in a foreign language. You know, British English. He can't ever understand them.

  9. I guess I'm not too annoyed with the whisper talking going on -- but you know what gets me and has me turning the channel right away? Reality shows where they cuss so much that the "beep!" sound is going off constantly. It's "beep!" here and "beep!" there and "beep! beep! beep!" everywhere, every other word or so gets the "beep!" sound. I don't know how people can watch the show and enjoy it with all the "beep!" interrupting all the time!

  10. I had never noticed this, but when I used to watch those shows I remember that acting device. Sort of silly, I think. But it does convey power when you control your voice and you are very angry.

  11. What bothers me is the apparently new marketing tool discovered by Quasimodo. Every commercial has bells in the background.

  12. I mainly watch reality shows. Some of the people are so mushmouthed that their words are actually shown on the screen like closed-captioning.

  13. Sheesh, you mean I'm living a soap opera? Any time we're in a meeting or at church and sitting together Queenie goes nuts with the whisper talk. Makes her mad when I don't whisper talk back so, you know, she's mad a lot ....

  15. I have a projecting voice so whisper talk has never been a tool used by me. I would not make a good librarian.
