I Make a Sound

I Make a Sound

If a tree falls in the forest and there is no one around to hear it, does it even make a sound?  Stupid philosophical bull shit; or so I used to think.  As I get older I realize that philosophy isn’t about finding answers, but it is about making you think.

The tree thing; of course it makes a sound.  Tree, land, impact, sound…has to happen.

Except, suppose in this one case the impact made no sound at all?  If there was no one around, how do we know?  There is no answer, but it makes you think.

It makes me think about blogging.

If you submit a post on the internet and no one ever reads it, did you have any impact?  Did you even make a sound?

It makes me think about life.

If you pass away and leave nothing behind, no memories, no ideas, no children, no friends, did you have any impact?  Did you even make a sound?

That is why I blog.  In addition to enjoying the writing, and the cyber-friends I have made, it is my way of having some impact.  It is my way of making a sound.

I’m not sure I have made that much of an impact in my life. I have four terrific children and five terrific grandchildren.  I expect they will have an impact, they will be my sound, but much of my own life I have been  quiet.  I did all the things you are supposed to do.  I went to school and earned my college degree.  I raised a family.  I put food on the table and a roof over heads, but in the great scheme of things I've been quiet.  I spent forty years working for the same firm which eventually had to be bought out to avoid going into bankruptcy…no sound there.

So I blog.

It is fun.  It is rewarding.  I meet people.  I exchange ideas and opinions.  I share in peoples good times and their bad times.  I hear what others have to say.  That means they make a sound.

If you read this; I made a sound.

  1. I hear you.
"I did all the things you are supposed to do"....I think that line speaks of a very important sort of impact to those who have been a part of your life.

  2. I think many, if not all, of us feel exactly the same way. But on the other hand, I think just being a "good person" says a lot. Teaching your kids about, honesty, integrety, etc, is important. If all of us were to be like that (like YOU) it wouldn't just be a sound, but a ROAR. Good job, Joe. :)

  4. You make me laugh each day, and my laughter makes a sound. In fact, my kids always look at me and ask, "WHY are you always laughing at your computer."

My grandmother passed away seven years ago and there's not a day that goes by that I don't think of her and miss her. I tell her stories to my kids and I have so many things in my home that are hers, and my kids will say to each other, "Be careful with that. It's great-grandma's!" Because I talk of her and tell her stories, she has made a sound. I often think about how I'm "just a mom" and have no other outside work that will "make a sound" as you say... but I guess if all ten of my kids have children and they have children and I am talked about and my stories are shared, then I will have made my sound through them. And maybe one day I will write a book, too. You never know:)

  5. When someone tells you, "Thank you!" and they really mean it, you've made a sound.

  9. I've read a lot of blogs, but I keep coming back to yours as much as I can. You've made a sound with me, and you always make me smile. Just being on this earth, we all make a difference!

  10. Believe me, you are not silent. I'm a big fan of philosophical debates and that tree does NOT make a sound when it falls in the forest IF nothing is there to hear it. But it really depends on your definition of sound. Sound, in my opinion, doesn't exist unless a mechanism for hearing exists. Otherwise it's just meaningless vibration. Voyager has just left our solar system and it's recording interesting clicks and screeches. For billions of years this was meaningless static but now a mechanism can hear it, making it sound.

  11. Excellent post, Joe. You definitely make a sound, both online and offline. I imagine that when your grandchildren grow up they will always have great stories to tell their children about their grandpa. As for online, you make us laugh everyday and that has its ripple effect. Thank you for that.

  12. I've been told that even my breathing is loud ... ha? ... I believe in energy.

Everything vibrates ... if your phone is on vibrate only, you can feel it... if you place it on something, it also makes a sound.

I believe that laughter is energy and will live on ... even if you're the only one who hears your laughter ...

… just read a blog about whale swallowing and digestion and now… making our own sounds heard.

blogging? love it. how else could such a short time of looking give me all this pondering information. thinking and typing words are energy … sending our thoughts through the internets … seriously… is that amazing? or what.

  13. When you make someone's life a little better you make a difference AND a sound. If you could tally up all of the smiles and laughs you give us every day, the noise would be horrendous. You not only make a sound, you reverberate!
    Thanks, Joe......I love your noise.

  14. Whew! It's good to hear that you're only making noise. I feared that you'd fallen down in the forest.

  16. How did I miss this one? Just read it now. Excellent post, and excellent comments too. There's so much pressure to achieve and be great these days that we can feel we have failed when we haven't. And I think blogs, twitter etc do have an impact. They make us think, laugh, feel anger, feel empathy, increase our understanding of what others are going through and how they think. That's a sound!
